Viking has put Malta directly on its cruise map. The line's new 2028-29 ocean programme includes a 16-day roundtrip Rome voyage titled 'Mediterranean, Malta & North Africa', one of two new itineraries in its largest ever ocean deployment.

The announcement covers over 700 departure dates across 80 voyages, reaching 301 ports in 84 countries across six continents. Viking is also adding two new ships: the Viking Vega, due in 2028, and the Viking Leda, scheduled for 2029. Each vessel will carry 998 guests in 499 all-veranda staterooms.

For Malta, the dedicated itinerary means a guaranteed flow of high-spending cruise passengers visiting the island over multiple seasons.

For Malta, the dedicated itinerary means a guaranteed flow of high-spending cruise passengers visiting the island over multiple seasons. The deployment signals Viking's confidence in the Mediterranean's appeal and positions Malta as a core stop rather than a secondary port.

Leah Talactac, Viking's president and CEO, said the deployment reflects the company's commitment to destination-focused travel. "With our largest ocean deployment to date, we are pleased to offer guests even more opportunities to explore the world in Viking comfort," she stated.

The other new itinerary is 'Alaskan Fjords & the Inside Passage', a 15-day route from Vancouver to Whittier. A returning favourite, 'Japan Discovery', also runs 15 days roundtrip Tokyo. Voyages range from eight days to extended World Voyages that can be combined for longer trips.

Viking is currently running an Anniversary Sale for North American travellers, offering reduced fares and up to free international airfare on select itineraries, plus a $25 deposit across all river, ocean and expedition programmes. The promotion runs until August 31, 2026.

For Malta's hospitality and tourism sector, the booking window opening two years ahead is a strong forward indicator. Cruise lines plan itineraries well in advance, and Viking's commitment to a Malta-focused route suggests sustained demand that could drive investment in port infrastructure and shore experiences.
