Malta's tourism arm has picked up a global award that underscores the island's rising profile in the superyacht market, a sector defined by high-spending visitors and long economic ripple effects.

The Malta Tourism Authority confirmed that VisitMalta received the Navigator Magazine Excellence Award for Destination at Seatrade Cruise Global 2026, held in April in Miami. Navigator is the publication of international yacht brokerage firm Northrop & Johnson.

Malta already holds the largest number of registered mega yachts in the world.

The award was presented at the VisitMalta stand by Daniel Wade, the firm's Global Head of Partnerships and Chief Content Officer. It recognises destinations that combine strong maritime infrastructure with compelling visitor appeal.

Malta already holds the largest number of registered mega yachts in the world. The island's marinas, including Msida Yacht Marina, Mġarr Harbour, and Vittoriosa Yacht Marina, which holds a twinning agreement with Saint-Tropez, are central to that claim.

Arthur Grima, MTA Director of Marketing, accepted the award alongside Michelle Buttigieg, the authority's North American market representative. "Malta, strategically positioned at the heart of the Mediterranean, continues to play an important role in global cruising itineraries while also serving as a premier base for superyacht operations," Grima said.

Buttigieg highlighted the shift in American awareness. "There was a time when many Americans weren't even sure where Malta was. Today, that has completely changed," she said. "American travellers have truly discovered Malta, drawn by its rich history, culture and unique Mediterranean appeal, as well as the growing visibility of mega yachts and cruise ships calling in Valletta, which has helped put the destination firmly on the map."

For Malta's business community, the recognition signals a maturing sector that attracts ultra-high-net-worth individuals and supports a network of local suppliers, crew services, and luxury hospitality operators. The cruise and yachting segment generates substantial revenue beyond the marina fees, extending into retail, dining, and refit work.

Wade noted that Malta's positioning sets it apart. "Malta's blend of strategic positioning and destination appeal truly sets it apart within the Mediterranean," he said.

With the award coming at one of the industry's largest events, Malta's profile among superyacht owners, charter brokers, and cruise line executives continues to rise. The MTA is betting that this visibility will translate into more port calls and longer stays in the seasons ahead.
