SME Chamber proposes automatic compensation for power outage losses

The Malta Chamber of SMEs wants a formal compensation system for businesses hit by prolonged power cuts. The proposal follows recent outages across multiple localities that disrupted operations for many of the country's small and medium enterprises.

For SMEs, the impact goes beyond inconvenience. Interrupted operations, lost sales, damaged stock, cancelled appointments, and added operational costs pile up quickly. Worker fatigue after sleepless nights also raises safety concerns, especially for those operating heavy machinery.

The Chamber acknowledged the ongoing investment in Malta's electricity grid. But it argued that infrastructure must keep pace with the country's economic and demographic growth. The discussion, it said, should move toward long-term resilience and better protection for businesses.

Its proposed Business Continuity Compensation Mechanism would kick in automatically once an electricity disruption exceeds clearly defined thresholds. The aim is to offer a transparent and predictable route to compensation without forcing businesses through ad hoc processes that create further stress and productivity loss.

The Chamber stressed that compensation should never be a substitute for investment in the grid. Both must form part of a comprehensive national strategy that reduces disruptions while ensuring businesses do not bear the financial brunt when exceptional events occur.

No electricity network can be entirely immune to failure, the Chamber noted. But modern economies need systems that not only lower the likelihood of disruptions but also provide fair and timely support when they happen.

The Malta Chamber of SMEs said it remains ready to work constructively with the Government, Enemalta, and other stakeholders to develop practical solutions that strengthen infrastructure, enhance business resilience, and safeguard the country's enterprise competitiveness.
