Malta is adding two new direct flight routes that strengthen its position as a hub for tourism and business. Aer Lingus began flying between Dublin and Malta International Airport on October 26, 2024, with three weekly services. Qatar Airways will follow in July 2025, operating four weekly flights from Doha.

The Aer Lingus route connects Malta to Dublin, a gateway to Northern Europe and transatlantic destinations. MTA CEO Carlo Micallef said the route strengthens ties with Ireland and improves connections via Dublin’s network. He called it a significant step toward expanding Malta’s reach to long haul markets.

Air connectivity is the backbone of our trade and tourism sectors, as well as a catalyst for educational exchanges and innovation.

The Qatar Airways link goes further. Hamad International Airport serves 197 destinations across five continents, giving Malta access to emerging markets in Asia, Africa, and Australia. Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg described air connectivity as the backbone of trade and tourism, and a catalyst for innovation.

Beyond passenger travel, the routes open opportunities for cargo and investment. The Maltese diaspora in Ireland and Australia will find easier movement. Officials also discussed investment possibilities in finance, tourism, and renewable energy with Qatari counterparts.

For Malta’s business community, these flights reduce travel friction to key economic regions. The Dublin route taps into Irish and North American markets, while Doha links to the Gulf and beyond. Both routes support year-round tourism and business travel, reducing seasonal dependence.

The MTA sees these developments as part of a broader push to improve air connectivity. With more direct links, Malta becomes a more accessible destination for investors, conference organisers, and corporate travellers. The next step will be sustaining and expanding these connections.
