Michelin Keys 2026: Malta's luxury hotels in line for global recognition

The Michelin Guide will reveal its 2026 Key hotel selection on September 18, opening a second annual round of global recognition for the world's most outstanding properties. The announcement covers over 9,000 hotels across more than 100 countries, and every hotel already in the Michelin selection is again eligible for a Key.

The Michelin Key is the hotel equivalent of the Michelin Star for restaurants. It awards one, two or three Keys based on design, architecture, service and personality. For Malta's luxury hospitality sector, this represents a direct route to international prestige and a chance to attract high-spending travellers who follow the Guide's recommendations.

Alongside the Key rankings, the Guide will introduce four special awards this year. The Architecture & Design Award celebrates hotels where unforgettable architecture and interior design are central to the guest experience. The Wellness Award recognises properties that place mental and physical well-being at the heart of the stay.

The Local Gateway Award honours hotels that facilitate remarkable and authentic local experiences for guests. The Opening of the Year Award celebrates bold new arrivals that made an immediate impact in their first year. Five nominees in each category will be announced in the weeks before September 18, with winners revealed on the day.

Last October, Michelin inspectors awarded thousands of Keys worldwide for the first time. Maltese hotels that made that inaugural cut will now compete again, alongside any new properties added to the selection since then. The full list will be published on the Michelin Guide website, app and social platforms.

For Malta, the Michelin Key system is more than a badge. It is a marketing lever that can elevate the island's profile among discerning travellers and luxury tour operators. Hoteliers who secure a Key gain immediate credibility in a crowded Mediterranean market.

The current Michelin hotel selection is already searchable online. The September 18 reveal will confirm which Maltese properties join the global elite.
