The MICHELIN Guide has confirmed it will unveil its 2026 hotel Key selection on September 18, a digital release that will also introduce four new awards recognising excellence in distinct areas of hospitality. The announcement, made on the Guide's Malta platform, signals another year of global scrutiny for hotels that aspire to the kind of prestige reserved for starred restaurants.

For Maltese hoteliers, the Key represents more than a badge. It is a market signal that can lift a property into a different pricing tier and draw international attention to the islands' hospitality offering. With over 9,000 properties across more than 100 countries already in the Guide's selection, the competition for a Key is intense, and Malta's boutique and luxury segments are well placed to compete.

This will be the second consecutive year of the global Key reveal. In October 2025, inspectors awarded Keys to thousands of hotels worldwide, and for 2026 every property in the MICHELIN selection, regardless of location, will again be eligible. That means Maltese hotels that impressed last year can retain or improve their standing, while newcomers have a fresh chance to break in.

The four new awards cover architecture and design, wellness, local gateway experiences, and opening of the year. Five nominees in each category will be named in the coming weeks, with winners announced alongside the Key reveal on September 18. For Malta, the local gateway award could be particularly relevant, given the islands' push towards authentic, experience-driven tourism.

The full selection will be published on the MICHELIN Guide website, app, and social platforms. Hoteliers and investors will be watching closely: a Key can reshape a property's brand equity overnight, and in a small market like Malta, the ripple effects are felt across the entire hospitality sector.
