Malta’s digital tourism strategy scores two golds in Canada

VisitMalta’s digital marketing team won two golds at the Canadian Online Publishing Awards for its Travelzoo campaign, boosting long-haul tourism strategy.
VisitMalta’s digital marketing team has picked up two gold awards at the Canadian Online Publishing Awards for its collaboration with Travelzoo.
The campaign, titled “Malta Moved Me: A First-Timer’s Tale”, won top prizes in Best Travel Story and Best Photo Journalism.
The awards recognise the effectiveness of targeted digital campaigns in long-haul markets crucial for Malta’s tourism revenue.
Malta Tourism Authority CEO Carlo Micallef said the success showcases the positive impact of reaching North American audiences through compelling storytelling and strong visual content. He added that this reinforces Malta’s position as a premium destination while supporting sustainable growth.
Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg said the awards reflect growing international recognition of Malta’s evolving tourism narrative. Strategic storytelling in long-haul markets like the US and Canada positions the islands as an authentic destination, strengthening global visibility among high-value audiences.
The feature was created by Travelzoo’s Senior Travel Editor Gabe Saglie, who documented his first visit to Malta through themes such as magical cities, culinary marvels, and natural beauty.
Saglie expressed his eagerness to return in 2026, particularly for the Grand Finale of the Malta International Fireworks Festival’s 25th anniversary edition. He noted that his first visit was a testament to the magical effect of the islands, driven by rich history, spectacular hospitality, and world-class cuisine. He has since returned several times and made friends there.
The MTA said it remains committed to high-impact international partnerships and digital storytelling to strengthen the islands’ global visibility as a quality, authentic, and sustainable destination.
This year’s fireworks festival runs from 18 to 30 April and includes a Canadian pyrotechnic team.
