Malta's businesses urged to weigh in on euro banknote redesign
The Central Bank of Malta is calling on residents and businesses to participate in the ECB survey on the future design of euro banknotes, with implications for cash-dependent industries.
The Central Bank of Malta is calling on businesses and residents to participate in the European Central Bank's survey on the future design of euro banknotes.
The survey closes on 21 September 2026 and offers a rare chance to influence the look of the currency used by millions daily.
The redesign is the first complete overhaul since the euro's introduction in 2002. Ten shortlisted proposals are based on two themes: "European culture" and "Rivers and birds". The ECB selected these following extensive consultation across Europe.
Governor Alexander Demarco said euro banknotes are a "tangible symbol of our shared European identity" and urged everyone to participate. "Through this survey, citizens have a unique opportunity to help shape the future design of the euro," he said.
For Malta's business community, the stakes go beyond design. Future banknotes will incorporate enhanced security features to fight counterfeiting, which could affect cash handling in retail, hospitality, and iGaming. Improved accessibility for visually impaired users and more sustainable materials through better production processes are also planned.
The ECB will weigh survey results together with a separate representative survey, technical assessments, and the Design Contest Jury's recommendations. The Governing Council is expected to take a final decision towards the end of 2026.
