Malta Wins Global Diving Award, Strengthening Tourism Pitch to German Market

Malta has been named the world's best diving destination at the boot Düsseldorf Dive Awards, a win that boosts its appeal to high-value German tourists.
Malta has been crowned the world's best diving destination at the boot Düsseldorf Dive Awards, a recognition that carries commercial weight for the island's tourism sector.
The award was announced on 24 January at boot Düsseldorf, the largest yacht and water sports trade fair globally. It was decided by a panel of chief editors from leading diving publications and a public vote from the international diving community.
The panel praised Malta for its professional diving infrastructure and the variety of opportunities for divers of all skill levels. The island has over 40 professional diving centres, two decompression chambers, and a range of wrecks, reefs and caves.
Convenience for German divers was also highlighted. Direct flights, value-for-money pricing, and Malta's compact size make it an easy destination for short breaks.
Martin Frendo, Director of the Malta Tourism Authority office in Germany, said the award highlights Malta's dedication to providing exceptional experiences for divers. He pointed to the island's rich marine biodiversity, historical treasures, and sustainable practices.
Carlo Micallef, CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority, said the win recognises the efforts of VisitMalta and its partners to improve the diving experience. He also stressed the commitment to environmental preservation as part of a sustainable tourism future.
For the Maltese business community, this award is more than a trophy. It reinforces Malta's positioning in the competitive diving tourism market, a niche that attracts repeat visitors and higher spending. The German market, in particular, is a key source of divers, and the award gives MTA fresh material for promotional campaigns.
Sustainability credentials, such as the Cirkewwa Marine Park and Blue Flag beaches, add to the destination's appeal as travellers increasingly prioritise eco-conscious choices.
The award should support bookings for dive centres, hotels, and related services, especially during the shoulder seasons when diving tourism can extend the traditional summer peak.
