Malta Tests First Self-Driving Bus on Gozo Roads

An autonomous bus is being trialled between San Lawrenz and il-Wilġa in Gozo, using AI and sensors to navigate without a driver.
An autonomous bus is now operating on Maltese roads for the first time. The vehicle is being tested on a route between San Lawrenz and il-Wilġa in Gozo. The pilot launched in 2026 under the metaCCAZE project. It gives residents and visitors a chance to experience what the project describes as autonomous mobility aimed at making transport safer, smarter and more sustainable.
The bus uses sensors, cameras, GPS and artificial intelligence to understand its surroundings and move safely without a driver controlling it constantly. It is designed to follow routes and stop for passengers automatically.
A trained operator will remain onboard at all times during the pilot phase. The vehicle is monitored for safety while it runs the route.
Tallinja, Malta's public transport operator, shared a video of the test on its social media channels, confirming the deployment.
For Malta's business and investment community, this trial matters well beyond the technology. Gozo's roads are narrow and winding, a very different environment from the controlled test tracks where autonomous vehicles typically debut. If the bus can cope with oncoming traffic, tight bends and pedestrian activity in a village setting like San Lawrenz, it would signal that autonomous public transport is viable for Malta's built-up and rural roads.
The pilot also opens questions about future transport investment. Autonomous shuttles could reshape last-mile connectivity in Gozo, reduce demand for private cars and change the equation for tourism mobility between the islands. For operators and developers, the outcome of this trial will inform whether Malta becomes a testbed for autonomous transport in Mediterranean island environments.
