Malta has picked up two UK travel industry awards that reinforce its standing in the British source market, a vital feeder for the local tourism economy.

The Malta Tourism Authority confirmed that the island was voted Most Desirable Island in Europe at the Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards. The ceremony took place on 6 November at London's Tate Modern and was hosted by comedian and travel presenter Jack Whitehall.

Winning the Wanderlust Gold Award for Europe’s most desirable island and the Aspire Award for inclusivity reflects our dedication to creating a destination that is as inviting as it is inclusive.

Wanderlust, the UK's most-read travel publication, reported 3.5 million votes from 168,000 readers across 22 categories. Malta finished ahead of Ireland, which took Silver, and Madeira, which earned Bronze.

Tolene van der Merwe, MTA's Director for the UK and Ireland, said the recognition underscores Malta's appeal among a highly engaged audience of travel enthusiasts.

Separately, Visit Malta received the Aspire Inclusive Initiative of the Year Award on 9 October in Manchester. The award, organised by UK luxury travel media brand Aspire, recognises leadership in diversity, equality and inclusion in tourism.

The authority's inclusivity efforts include sponsoring the Icons of Inclusion event, hosting EuroPride 2023, and ongoing work to improve accessibility for visitors of all abilities.

MTA CEO Carlo Micallef linked both awards to the organisation's broader strategy. He said the double win reflects a dedication to creating a destination that is both inviting and inclusive.

For Malta's tourism operators and hoteliers, the awards provide fresh marketing ammunition in a competitive UK market. The Wanderlust Gold in particular carries weight with a readership that actively votes, signalling strong word-of-mouth potential.

The Aspire award also positions Malta to attract the growing segment of travellers who prioritise inclusivity and accessibility when choosing a destination.
