The Malta Biennale Foundation now has a permanent executive board and management team, appointed by Minister Malcolm Paul Agius Galea and the Heritage Malta board. The move institutionalises what has been a two-edition event run under Heritage Malta's wing.

Mario Cutajar will chair the executive board, joined by Noel Zammit, Kenneth Gambin, and Pierre Bonello as members. The foundation itself was established through a notarial deed signed at MUŻA in May 2026, following a government decision in March of the same year to create a dedicated entity.

Anthony Gatt takes the role of General Director. Melanie Erixon will serve as Director of Operations, and Michelle Delceppo as Administration Manager. The team is now tasked with preparing the third edition of the Malta Biennale, scheduled for March to May 2028 at Heritage Malta's historic sites and museums.

International calls, including the search for the next Artistic Director, will open in the coming weeks. The Biennale has drawn significant global interest since its 2024 launch, receiving thousands of artistic proposals from multiple countries and coverage in international media.

The first two editions were held under the patronage of the President of Malta and UNESCO. The Malta Biennale remains the only biennale in the world to have received UNESCO patronage, a mark of distinction that raises the event's international profile.

With a permanent foundation now embedded within Heritage Malta, the Biennale moves from a project-based operation to a standing institution. The appointments signal a longer-term commitment to positioning Malta as a destination for contemporary art on the global calendar.
