Malta appoints new UN Youth Delegate as programme hits record applications

Julianne Vella has been appointed as Malta’s United Nations Youth Delegate, a role that will see her represent the country’s young people at international forums over the next two years.

Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Chris Fearne presented Vella with her Appointment Certificate, marking the latest chapter in a programme that has been running in Malta since 2021.

Vella joins Samuel Camilleri Brincat, who has served as Malta’s UN Youth Delegate over the past year. Together, the two will bring the perspectives of Maltese youth to discussions on global issues.

The programme this year attracted a record 31 applications, a sign that Maltese young people are increasingly eager to contribute to international dialogue and represent their country abroad.

Minister Fearne underlined the importance of youth participation in foreign policy, saying it is essential to ensure that young voices are heard in decisions shaping both the present and the future.

For Malta’s business community, the development of globally minded young leaders is not just a diplomatic asset. It strengthens the country’s pipeline of talent with international exposure, governance experience, and multilateral negotiation skills qualities that are increasingly valuable in a small, trade-dependent economy.

Vella brings her own strong credentials to the role. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Data Science and Politics at University College Dublin and has held various roles with national and international youth organisations.

Her background in youth representation, governance, and international cooperation positions her well to amplify Malta’s voice on the world stage.

“I am eager to begin working for Malta by bringing the voice of Maltese young people to United Nations forums and contributing to the promotion of peace, multilateralism and dialogue,” Vella said.

The appointment signals a continued commitment by Malta to invest in its young talent, giving them concrete platforms to shape policy and build networks that will serve the country for decades to come.
