Malta Airport Warns of Summer Delays as Upgrade Works Continue

Malta International Airport has issued a summer travel advisory, urging passengers to allow extra time as it braces for record traffic and ongoing construction. The airport expects its busiest summer yet, with Thursdays seeing the highest passenger volumes.

Passengers travelling to non-Schengen destinations should prepare for lengthier border control checks. The airport warned that increased traffic will likely result in longer queues and possible delays at key touchpoints.

The advisory comes as the airport pushes ahead with a significant investment programme. Works include a reconfiguration of the main car park, which will add 100 spaces by the end of April. The Central Reconfiguration Project has already doubled the number of pre-security gates and expanded circulation space inside the terminal.

Other ongoing projects include the replacement of the escalator connecting the Welcomers’ Hall to the food court, as well as reconfiguration of retail space in that area. Demolition works at departures are also underway to increase circulation space at border control, expected to be completed by the end of April.

For Malta’s business community, the airport is a critical asset. Any disruption to passenger flow can impact tourism, business travel, and the island’s reputation as a seamless destination. The temporary inconveniences are part of a long-term strategy to handle growing demand and enhance operational efficiency.

The airport advised passengers to use alternative transport to avoid car park congestion, keep liquids and electronics in hand luggage, check gate monitors regularly, and follow signage directing them to restrooms and alternative routes. It apologised for the inconvenience and thanked the public for their cooperation.

With the summer season kicking off, the message for travellers and businesses alike is clear: plan ahead and expect some turbulence as the airport builds for the future.
