Malta Airport Among Europe's Top Performers in April, May Passengers Top 1 Million

Malta International Airport is setting the pace for European peers, with April traffic growth of 13.5 per cent placing it among the best performers in the EU+ group, according to Airports Council International data.

The momentum carried into May. The airport welcomed 1.08 million passengers last month, supported by a summer schedule of over 110 destinations and three new routes launched in May.

Seat capacity rose 18.6 per cent year on year. Despite that increase, the airport recorded a seat load factor of 83.5 per cent, indicating that demand is keeping pace with expanded supply.

The strong numbers align with a broader shift identified by the European Travel Commission, which found southern European and Mediterranean destinations are the preferred choice for summer travel this year.

Malta’s top source markets remained consistent. The UK led with a 21.3 per cent share, followed by Italy, Poland, Germany and France. Growth among these markets ranged from 8.0 per cent to 62.5 per cent.

For Malta’s business community, the airport data is a reliable leading indicator of tourism performance. A bumper summer would boost hospitality, retail and ground transport operators, though it also puts pressure on infrastructure and staffing.

The airport’s ability to maintain high load factors while adding capacity suggests the upward trend has room to run. That will be closely watched by investors and businesses across the tourism value chain.
