Malta's 4A Games to debut METRO 2039 at gamescom Opening Night Live

4A Games, the Sliema-based studio, will showcase its post-apocalyptic FPS METRO 2039 at gamescom 2026, marking a major milestone for Malta's game development sector.
A Sliema-based studio is taking its biggest title yet to one of the world's largest gaming stages. 4A Games, the Maltese-Ukrainian developer, will debut METRO 2039 at gamescom 2026 in Cologne.
The game will be featured during gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, ahead of the main event running from 27th to 30th August. This marks the first time the public will get hands-on experience with the post-apocalyptic first-person shooter.
METRO 2039 is described by the studio as its biggest title to date. The announcement comes from GamingMalta, the foundation tasked with promoting the island's gaming ecosystem.
The gamescom slot signals more than a product launch. It positions a Malta-based studio on a global stage where industry leaders and millions of players converge. For a small island economy, that visibility translates directly into investment appeal and talent attraction.
4A Games has its roots in Ukraine but operates from Sliema. The studio's ability to secure a primetime slot at gamescom suggests the local ecosystem can support AAA development, not just iGaming and mobile titles.
GamingMalta framed the announcement as a tangible step toward Malta Vision 2050, the government's long-term economic strategy. The foundation has consistently pushed to diversify Malta's gaming reputation beyond online gambling.
The gamescom appearance also raises the bar for other local developers. If a studio can develop a globally anticipated title from Sliema, the argument for more international studios to set up in Malta becomes stronger.
For the local business community, the message is clear. Malta can host more than service providers and back-office operations. It can house studios that compete for attention at the industry's biggest events.
