Italy unseats UK as top MIA market for first time since February

Italy overtakes the UK as Malta International Airport's leading market in July, with Poland surging 50% and Germany and France slipping.
Italy has overtaken the United Kingdom as Malta International Airport's most popular market for the first time since February. Just over a fifth of all passengers travelled to or from Italy in July.
The shift comes as airlines added capacity on several Italian routes for the summer season. The UK had held the top spot since late winter.
Poland continued its strong performance, remaining Malta's best-connected Eastern European market. Passenger numbers from Poland jumped by almost 50 per cent.
Germany and France ranked fourth and fifth, but both slipped into negative territory for the first time this summer. Germany registered a marginal decline, while France dropped 5.1 per cent. The airport attributed the falls to decreased flight frequencies on several routes connecting Malta to those markets.
Despite the increase in seat capacity, which grew 17.4 per cent, the seat load factor remained high at 87.6 per cent. That indicates strong demand even as airlines added more seats.
The Maltese Islands benefitted from an average of 108 daily flights during the summer months. Almost 1.2 million passengers passed through the airport in July alone.
For Malta's tourism and hospitality businesses, the data signals a shifting landscape. Operators that have traditionally relied on British tourists may need to reconsider their marketing and service strategies as Italian demand strengthens and Eastern European markets like Poland accelerate. The dip in German and French traffic, meanwhile, suggests those markets may require renewed promotional efforts or improved air connectivity to recover.
