Gozo Pride 2026: Inclusion as an Economic Driver for the Island

The fifth edition of Gozo Pride, held under the theme "Pride Without Permission", signals more than a social milestone. It represents a strategic investment by the Maltese government in positioning Gozo as an inclusive destination, with direct implications for the island's tourism and talent attraction.
According to TVMnews.mt, Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri and Minister for Equality and Civil Rights Rosianne Cutajar attended the event. Camilleri highlighted the progress made in Gozo, pointing to changing attitudes and a safer environment for the LGBTIQ+ community. He recalled that Malta hosted EuroPride in 2023, an event that showcased the country's advances.
Camilleri said that progress is measured not only by laws and policies but by the everyday safety people feel at home, at work, at school, and in their community. He stressed that the theme "Pride Without Permission" underscores that freedom, dignity, respect, and love are rights, not privileges.
Cutajar echoed that message, stating that the right to be oneself does not require permission or validation. She warned that progress should never be taken for granted and must be protected and strengthened for future generations.
Roan Coughtry, an Executive Member of LGBTIQ+ Gozo, offered a more cautionary note. He said the event is not only a celebration but a protest against injustice, discrimination, and violence, adding that history shows rights can be changed and taken away.
Beyond the rhetoric, the government has backed its words with tangible support. In 2021, the Ministry for Gozo provided LGBTIQ+ Gozo with a dedicated office, the Qawsalla Hub, which offers services to the community. Camilleri confirmed the ministry will continue to support the organisation.
For Malta's business community, the message is clear. Gozo is being developed as a brand that values inclusion, which can attract a diverse workforce and visitors seeking a welcoming environment. This aligns with broader efforts to diversify the island's economy beyond its traditional sectors.
The event itself, now in its fifth year, reinforces Gozo's visibility as a destination that celebrates diversity. As the government continues to invest in community infrastructure, the economic returns from such positioning may become increasingly measurable.
