German food service acquisition gets Maltese competition review

The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority has opened a public consultation on a proposed acquisition in the German food sector, a deal that could have ripple effects for local businesses sourcing frozen meat and vegan products.

The concentration involves Meat Acquico Germany II GmbH acquiring VION Food Service Holding GmbH. The notification was filed on 25 June 2026 under the Control of Concentrations Regulations.

Meat Acquico is a holding company within the Group of Butchers, a group primarily focused on retail distribution. Its product portfolio covers private label meats, smoked and BBQ sausages, soups, meals, salads, spreads and dips.

VION Food Service operates under the Salomon FoodWorld brand, designing, producing and supplying frozen meat and veggie/vegan products to the out-of-home food service sector.

For Maltese importers and hospitality operators, the deal brings together retail and food service supply chains under one corporate umbrella. That concentration may shift negotiating power and product availability for businesses that rely on these German suppliers.

The Director General of the Office for Competition has invited interested third parties to submit written objections within seven days of the notice's publication.

The authority's review follows the framework set out in Legal Notice 294 of 2002, which governs control of concentrations in Malta.

Local businesses, particularly those in hospitality and food service procurement, should consider whether this transaction could affect their supply terms or competitive options in the frozen and plant-based food segments.

The seven-day objection window is now running, giving market participants a narrow opportunity to flag concerns before the regulator reaches a decision.
