Fashion meets history: Charles & Ron donate gown to Heritage Malta after palace exhibition

A new exhibition at the Grand Master's Palace sees six Charles & Ron gowns inspired by the restored tapestries, with one piece entering the national collection.
Heritage Malta has opened a fashion exhibition inside the Grand Master's Palace, partnering with local designers Charles & Ron to turn restored 18th-century tapestries into contemporary evening wear. One gown will remain permanently in the national textile collection.
The exhibition, titled Inspired by History: From Tapestries to Contemporary Fashion, features six pieces from Charles & Ron's GIOIA collection. That collection was created for Fall/Winter 2021/22 but never shown publicly due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The timing is deliberate. The tapestries of Grand Master Ramon Perellos have just returned from restoration in Belgium, and the Tapestry Chamber has been refurbished. Heritage Malta used the moment to stage a fashion show in the palace corridors and mount the display, which runs until the end of August.
For Heritage Malta, the collaboration is a commercial and cultural play. CEO Noel Zammit described the donation as a vote of confidence that strengthens the agency's mission. He noted this is the second time in a few years Charles & Ron have contributed to the national collection.
"It is people who bring historic sites, palaces and museums to life," Zammit said. "Charles & Ron succeeded in demonstrating all of this when their models wore history."
The donated gown draws from the tapestry scene known as The Striped Horse. It is a hand-beaded, hand-embroidered evening piece with a funnel neckline and a silhouette that flares at the hem. The original forest-green tones have been reworked into rich shades of pink, creating a modern dialogue with the historic textile.
The exhibition is housed in the corridor leading to the Tapestry Chamber, putting restored art and fashion in direct conversation. For Charles & Ron, the placement offers permanent institutional exposure and a link to Malta's heritage that few commercial brands can claim.
