Maltese software firm Cleverbit pivots from talent placement to owning client outcomes

Cleverbit is changing how it sells. The Maltese software company is moving away from placing engineers with clients and instead taking ownership of the full delivery pipeline, outcomes included.

In an interview with FinanceMalta, founder Simon said the shift reflects a broader change in the software industry. Clients no longer just want talent. They want results with accountability.

The company's culture offers a window into how it approaches complex work. It started with a tea party. A team lead once invited developers to join him for tea, and the conversation turned into a serious debate about boiling points, heat latency and steam temperature.

Simon described it as a moment with no hierarchy and no performance, just people thinking out loud together. That tea-party tradition now happens every time someone new joins the team, complete with a debate on physics or maths.

Today, that same curiosity is being applied to artificial intelligence. Cleverbit is developing AI governance strategies, building AI agent monitoring tools, and creating systems for AI and engineers to communicate more effectively. Simon said the pace of change in the industry is accelerating faster than many businesses expected.

The company is also expanding its footprint across the UK, EU, and US. It is being invited to speak at industry events, forming partnerships with online media platforms, and deepening ties with leading AI companies globally.

One project that stands out is a business continuity platform built for ICON plc, the world's largest clinical research organisation. Previously, ICON relied on emails and spreadsheets to track disruptions affecting clinical trial sites. Cleverbit replaced that with a single platform that automates the entire process, from flagging an event to final regulatory sign-off, with a complete audit trail. The solution was delivered a month ahead of schedule.

Simon said the project proves that speed and control are not a trade-off. You can have both.

For Malta's tech ecosystem, Cleverbit's evolution is significant. Simon said Malta gives a small company genuine reach. English as a working language, EU access, and a mature regulatory environment for FinTech and iGaming mean clients in those sectors do not need to explain their compliance requirements from scratch. The University of Malta is producing strong AI talent, which becomes more valuable every year as agentic engineering shifts from a general skill to a specialists one.

Cleverbit's move from talent supplier to outcome owner could become a template for other local firms aiming to move up the value chain.
